The History of Club Getaway
In 1946, Long Island eye doctor George Fink discovered that the camp he had gone to from
a camper to a counselor, Camp Leonard Leonore, established in 1926, was up for sale.
He couldn't resist! For the next 30 years, he and wife Ruth, along with help from children
Paul, Victor and Leslie ran the camp as a children's summer camp. Once out of college,
the Fink children became more involved in the family business.
For years, Victor had been struck by how many parents longed to go back to the care-free
days of summer camp. A trip to Club Med in 1976 confirmed his suspicions that grownups
still had that camp spirit. That year he buried the bugle, put in the hot tub and bars and
Club Getaway was born. Since then, more than 100,000 grownups have discovered what it's like
to be a kid again.
This year is not only Club Getaway's 30th Birthday, but the 60th year of Fink family
ownership and the 80th of continuous operation. And we have a lot of celebrating to do!
