What is “Dry January”?

Dry January is the practice of abstaining from drinking alcohol for the entire month of January. It’s a way to reset your relationship with drinking and start the new year off on healthy footing.

Reaping the benefits of Dry January requires more than just cutting back; it means completely eliminating alcohol from your diet for an entire month. While this may sound daunting, it doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of delicious mocktails that can help make Dry January fun. Plus, it gives you time to explore new flavors and ingredients that you may not have tried otherwise!

Why Participate?

There are many reasons why people choose to participate in Dry January.

For starters, it helps break unhealthy habits associated with drinking—like waking up feeling groggy or relying on alcohol as a crutch in social situations.

Additionally, abstaining from booze can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve sleep quality, which can increase energy levels during the day.

Finally, having a few weeks without alcohol gives your liver time to recover from any damage caused by excessive drinking over the holidays. All of these benefits come together to create an overall healthier lifestyle that is well worth committing to in the New Year!

So if you’re participating and out and about during Dry January, don’t worry—you don’t have to feel left out when everyone else around you is having drinks!  There are plenty of delicious mocktails that are just as tasty as alcoholic drinks without any of the unhealthy side effects.

Here are our five favorites:

1) One of the classic mocktails is the Virgin Mojito.

This refreshing drink is made with mint, lime, and sugar, and can be easily turned into a mocktail by swapping out the rum for club soda or lemon-lime soda. For extra flavor, add crushed mint leaves or muddled fruit such as strawberries or raspberries before stirring everything together.

2) Another tasty option is a Virgin Margarita.

Simply mix together equal parts lime juice (or freshly squeezed lime), orange juice, and agave syrup (or honey), add a pinch of salt, and pour over ice. for this tangy twist on a classic cocktail! Add some salt around the rim if desired.

3) Or, for a more tropical twist, try a virgin piña colada,

4) Pomegranate Lemonade

This refreshing mocktail combines pomegranate juice with freshly-squeezed lemon juice and sugar or honey for sweetness. Top off with club soda or sparkling water for extra fizziness!

5) Virgin Sangria

Combine white grape juice with fresh or frozen fruits such as oranges, apples or berries; sweetener if desired; and sparkling water or club soda for added fizziness! Serve over ice in tall glasses garnished with extra fruit slices if desired.
