There’s something about a frozen lake that just makes you want to go out and have some fun.
Sure, ice skating is always a classic option, but why not try out some of these more unique activities? From ice fishing to going for a walk on the ice, there’s plenty of fun to be had this winter.
So grab your friends and get ready to enjoy the chilly weather out on the lake!
Warning: Always Check The Ice Conditions Before Heading Out Onto Any Lake and Always Let Someone Know Where You Are Going And How Long You Will Be There.
Here is a chart that illustrates some of the general guidelines for ice thickness. Keep this in mind when you go out there.
Now get out there, be safe, and have fun.
1) Ice Fishing:
Ice fishing is a great way to not only get out and enjoy the frozen lake but also to catch some fish. Whether you are new to ice fishing or a seasoned pro, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when getting out on the lake.
- Dress in layers
- Bring a thermos of hot cocoa or coffee to keep you warm
- Wear waterproof gear and boots that can be easily removed
- Take a portable chair, ice chisel, fishing pole(s), and bait with you. Stop at your local fishing store before heading out to get all the gear you’ll need.
- Carry an emergency kit in case the weather changes suddenly
- Know the weather forecast. The last thing you want to do is head out on the ice only to find that you are in danger due to bad weather.
2) Cross Country Skiing:
Cross country skiing is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the beautiful winter scenery. All you need is a pair of skis, poles, and plenty of warm clothes. Be careful not to go too far out and always stay aware of the conditions. If you start feeling unsafe, head back inside immediately.
3) Snowshoeing:
Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the winter landscape. All you need are some snowshoes and warm clothes. Make sure to check the weather conditions before heading out, as heavy snowfall can make traveling difficult.
As long as you take precautions, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a day (or several) on the frozen lake. Bundle up and get out there!
4) Build A Curling Rink:
Curling is a great winter sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Building your own rink on a frozen lake this winter is easier than you think.
All you need to do is clear off a rectangular area approximately 15′ wide and anywhere from 50′ – 150′ long, you make the call on how long you want it.
Then you’ll need to make “The House” or the scoring area. This is typically a set of 3 Rings. Starting with the center which is a circle around a 2ft diameter, then another with a 4ft diameter, and the last with an 8ft diameter. It’s your rink so make them however large or small you want.
Then you’ll need your curling stones. Here is a fun video that explains one way that you can make them at home.
Lastly, if you want to be a true pro (and add to the fun) you’ll need a few brooms to help clear the way for your stones.
Curling is a great way to spend an afternoon with friends or family. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
5) Throw A Winter Party or BBQ:
Hosting a winter party is a great way to get friends and family together during the colder months. Kick it up a notch by finding a safe, frozen lake and moving the party there.
This is perfect for those who want to spend more time outside in the cold. Just make sure you have plenty of warm drinks and snacks on hand!
You can even bring out a BBQ to cook right out on the lake and it can even provide some heat for any guests that may get cold.
For added heat, bring some firewood and start a fire on the ice. Bring a fire bowl or solo stove to help keep it contained.
6) Launch Rockets or Fly Kites:
If you’re looking for something a little more active, consider launching rockets or flying kites. Not only is this a lot of fun, but it can also be pretty relaxing watching your creations soar through the sky. Doing it on a frozen lake also decreases the chances of you losing your rockets in the trees as lakes are often large enough for the rocket to land back on them
Here are a few rockets that would be perfect.
Just be sure to keep an eye on the weather conditions and avoid launching rockets or flying kites if there is too much wind. Safety should always come first!
That’s all for now! Get out and enjoy the frozen lakes this winter and make sure to tag us in any pictures you share on social media. We’d love to see you having fun out on the lakes.
